Large molecules in diffuse interstellar clouds

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 1988
The effects of the presence of a substantial component of large molecules on the chemistry of diffuse molecular clouds are explored, and detailed models of the zeta Persei and zeta Ophiuchi clouds are constructed. The major consequence is a reduction in the abundances of singly charged atomic species.

On the CH(+) ion in diffuse interstellar clouds

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 1986

The CN radical in diffuse interstellar clouds

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 1984
A survey of 15 lines of sight for the CN B /sup 2/..sigma../sup +/--X /sup 2/..sigma../sup +/ interstellar absorption lines shows that the CN column density in diffuse interstellar clouds follows the relation log N(CN)proportionalm log N(H/sub 2/), where mroughly-equal3.

On the origin of NH in diffuse interstellar clouds

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1993
The observation by Meyer & Roch of NH in the interstellar clouds towards ζ Per and HD 27778 cannot be explained with conventional gas-phase chemistry models. A simple non-equilibrium model for the ζ Per cloud, which incorporates the grain-surface production of NH and OH or, alternatively, NH 3 and H 2 O, is able to reproduce the abundances of all ...

Diffuse and Dark Clouds in the Interstellar Medium

1987
This chapter deals with the IUE observations of interstellar matter in diffuse and dark clouds in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds. We will describe the data, its means of analysis, and the derived scientific knowledge about the structure, abundances, and physical state of the gas.

The astrochemistry of diffuse interstellar clouds

2004
This paper provides an overview of the current research activity at the AstroChemistry Group (ACG) of the Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari (OAC) in the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Our team has been growing up since late ’80s: from our first observations of Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs), several related topics became part of the ...

The Chemistry of Diffuse and Dark Interstellar Clouds

1998
Abstract Ever since the realization early this century that the space between the stars is not empty, the study of the physics and chemistry of the interstellar gas has played a prominent role in astrophysics (Eddington 1926). Most of the early work focused on absorption line observations of diffuse interstellar clouds, which do not ...
