Precise Radar Range Measurements with Digisondes

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
A digisonde phase-difference technique measures precise radar ranges of echoes reflected from the ionosphere. The technique, which analyzes the phase differences between signals at slightly different frequencies, allows measuring the reflection range, i.e., the virtual height h′(f) for vertical sounding, with accuracies of better than one kilometer ...

Analysis of digisonde drift measurements quality

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2012
Ionosondes underwent significant improvements since their invention in 1924 (Breit and Tuve, 1926). At the beginning, ionospheric sounders measured only vertical profile of electron concentration. Contemporary modern digital ionosondes usually provide ionospheric drift measurement as a part of the routine monitoring in addition to the classical ...

First results from the Cyprus digisonde

IET 11th International Conference on Ionospheric Radio Systems and Techniques (IRST 2009), 2009
A new ionospheric station was recently established in Nicosia (Cyprus) to initiate ionospheric research on the island. The deployment of a DPS-4D (digisonde) developed at the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Center for Atmospheric Research (UMLCAR), is considered very beneficial to the ionospheric scientific community, taking into account the lack ...

Advancing Digisonde Technology: the DPS-4D

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008
A new ionosonde, the Digisonde model DPS-4D, replaces the aging DPS-4. Faster computer hardware and operating systems together with digital transmitters/receivers provide unprecedented measurement flexibility, data precision, and signal processing gain. The novel features in this latest Digisonde are discussed and explained.

A topside investigation over a mid-latitude digisonde station in Cyprus

Advances in Space Research, 2021
Abstract We examine the systematic differences between topside electron density measurements recorded by different techniques over the low-middle latitude operating European station in Nicosia, Cyprus (geographical coordinates: 35.14oN, 33.2oE), (magnetic coordinates 31.86oN, 111.83 oE).

Geomagnetic storm time studies using Digisonde data

Advances in Space Research, 1997
Abstract The initial, main and recovery stages of three magnetic storms that occurred during March 1990, June 1991 and November 1993 are discussed in terms of the response of the ionosphere as measured by Digisondes in the polar, high latitude and equatorial regions.

Low latitude digisonde measurements and comparison with IRI

Advances in Space Research, 1996
Abstract To compare measured electron density profiles with IRI predictions a rigorous algorithm is used to determine the average representative profile (ARP) from a set of individual electron density profiles. The technique is based on the Digisonde profile inversion that represents each profile by a set of boundary values and coefficients.

Research on ionosphere drift velocity based on digisonde observation

ISAPE2012, 2012
In this paper, a simply method was introduced to be calculated drift velocity of the ionosphere by analysis the frequency shift and phase change of the receiving signals from digisonde. By using data was observed with TR169 station at Tromso (E19.2°, N69.6°) and JI91J station at Jicamarca (W76.8°, S12.0°) in 2010, the ionosphere drift velocity were ...

Verification of the TSMP-assisted digisonde topside profiling technique

Acta Geophysica, 2009
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the TSMP-assisted Digisonde (TaD) topside profiling technique. We present systematic comparisons between electron density profiles and TEC parameters extracted from TaD model with (a) CHAMP-derived TEC parameters, (b) CHAMP reconstructed profiles, (c) ground based GPSderived TEC parameters ...

Digisonde Observations During Chemical Releases

1976
Abstract : Ionospheric observations with a Digisonde system during upper atmosphere chemical releases were carried out at Wallops Island (ALADDIN 74) in June 1974. Ionogram observations were combined with angle of arrival and Doppler measurements. Ionogram data of ALADDIN 72 and 74 were analyzed with reference to the chemical releases.
