The synthesis of dihematoporphyrin ether and related porphyrin dimers [PDF]
Abstract Dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE) has been synthesised by two separate procedures; these routes also allow the synthesis of ether linked porphyrin dimers containing one or two vinyl groups rather than hydroxyethyl side chains. The latter dimers, but not DHE, have anti-cancer activity.

Complications of Whole Bladder Dihematoporphyrin Ether Photodynamic Therapy [PDF]
Photodynamic therapy with dihematoporphyrin ether was used to treat superficial bladder tumors in 7 patients with a followup of at least 1 year. Each patient received treatment to the whole bladder and those with papillary lesions received additional focal treatment.

Transcutaneous Determination of Tissue Dihematoporphyrin Ether Content [PDF]
• Photodynamic therapy involves the use of light of appropriate wavelength to excite a photosensitizer resulting in tissue destruction. The photosensitizer dihematoporphyrin ether is selectively retained in tumors allowing for tumor destruction while sparing normal structures. Accessibility of skin tumors makes them well suited for photodynamic therapy.

On the Preparation of Dihematoporphyrin Ether-Free Hematoporphyrin Derivative [PDF]
A dihematoporphyrin ether-free hematoporphyrin derivative has been prepared by a base-catalysed dehydration of hematoporphyrin with sodium hydroxide. The identification was performed by HPLC and mass spectroscopy (FD-MS). The reaction of hematoporphyrin with 1 M sodium hydroxide for 24 h yields more than 90% of the monomeric porphyrins.

In Vitro Photosensitization of Human Head and Neck Squamous Cancer Cells by Dihematoporphyrin‐Ether [PDF]
In vitro experiments were performed to evaluate the direct cytotoxic and photosensitizing effects of dihematoporphyrin‐ether (DHE) on the head and neck squamous cancer cell line, UM‐SCC‐38. Normal fibroblasts, normal cultured keratinocytes, and the UM‐MEL‐1 pigmented malignant melanoma cell line were used as controls.
