Dihydroxyacetone Naphthoquinone Sunscreen

To the Editor.— During the past decade, we have successfully used a sunscreen containing dihydroxyacetone/ naphthoquinone (lawsone) for patients with all types of cutaneous photosensitivity. 1 An advantage of this sunscreen is its capacity to induce a broad "ultraviolet shield" (290 to 405 nm) in the uppermost layer of the skin.

The in vivo formation of AGEs contributes to some of the complications of diabetes including atherosclerosis, cataract formation, and renal failure.

Antagonism of cyanide poisoning by dihydroxyacetone

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) effectively antagonized the lethal effect of cyanide in mice and rabbits, particularly if administered in combination with thiosulfate. Oral DHA (2 and 4 g/kg) given to mice 10 min before injection (i.p.) of cyanide increased the LD50 values of cyanide from 5.7 mg/kg to 12 and 17.6 mg/kg, respectively.
