Shear-induced collapse of the dilute lamellar phase

I show that a dilute, sterically stabilized lyotropic smectic liquid crystal, subjected to a sufficiently large velocity gradient in the plane of the layers, will undergo a phase separation, with regions of reduced layer spacing coexisting with regions devoid of any layer material.

Phase diagrams for correlated dilution problems

The authors study spins with correlated ('bootstrap') dilution in which a (randomly occupied) site only develops a magnetic moment if surrounded by at least m magnetic neighbours. A generalisation of the Harris criterion indicates that the tendency of correlated disorder is to favour a new critical behaviour upon dilution.

Phase Transition of Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor

Three types of phase transitions in diluted magnetic semiconductor, first‐order, second‐order and mixed‐order, are found in theory. Especially the mixed type transition shows two steps transition and novel specific heat property. Specific heat properties disclose a possible meta ferromagnetic phase confirmed by the experimental qualitative result.

The automated microbatch technique developed at Imperial College has been used to establish a phase diagram for crystallization. The concentrations of the protein (carboxypeptidase G2) and precipitant (PEG 4000) were varied, while pH and temperature were kept constant.
