Dilution of oral D3‐Creatine to measure creatine pool size and estimate skeletal muscle mass: development of a correction algorithm

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2018
Muscle mass can be measured directly in vivo by isotope dilution, using Creatine‐(methyl‐d3) monohydrate (D3‐Cr) by mouth followed by measurement of the steady‐state enrichment of D3‐creatinine (D3‐Crn) in urine.

Statistical mechanics of sparse generalization and model selection

open access: yes, 2009
One of the crucial tasks in many inference problems is the extraction of sparse information out of a given number of high-dimensional measurements. In machine learning, this is frequently achieved using, as a penality term, the $L_p$ norm of the model ...

Dilution of the cell cycle inhibitor Whi5 controls budding yeast cell size

open access: yesNature, 2015
Cell size fundamentally affects all biosynthetic processes by determining the scale of organelles and influencing surface transport. Although extensive studies have identified many mutations affecting cell size, the molecular mechanisms underlying size ...

ERBIN limits epithelial cell plasticity via suppression of TGF‐β signaling

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In breast and lung cancer patients, low ERBIN expression correlates with poor clinical outcomes. Here, we show that ERBIN inhibits TGF‐β‐induced epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in NMuMG breast and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines. ERBIN suppresses TGF‐β/SMAD signaling and reduces TGF‐β‐induced ERK phosphorylation.

Perturbation expansion for the diluted two-dimensional XY model

open access: yes, 2006
We study the quasi-long-range ordered phase of a 2D XY model with quenched site-dilution using the spin-wave approximation and expansion in the parameter which characterizes the deviation from completely homogeneous dilution.

Effect of Track Overlap on the Microstructure and Properties of the CoCrMoSi PTA Coatings [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials Research, 2015
Broadly speaking, the research and design of coatings are generally studied by way of single-track deposits; otherwise, the development of a coated part entails the understanding of how multi-track welding influences the microstructure and properties of ...

Thermostable neutral metalloprotease from Geobacillus sp. EA1 does not share thermolysin's preference for substrates with leucine at the P1′ position

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Knowing how proteases recognise preferred substrates facilitates matching proteases to applications. The S1′ pocket of protease EA1 directs cleavage to the N‐terminal side of hydrophobic residues, particularly leucine. The S1′ pocket of thermolysin differs from EA's at only one position (leucine in place of phenylalanine), which decreases cleavage ...

Stability of the replica symmetric solution in diluted perceptron learning

open access: yes, 2012
We study the role played by the dilution in the average behavior of a perceptron model with continuous coupling with the replica method. We analyze the stability of the replica symmetric solution as a function of the dilution field for the generalization

Surface evolution during crystalline silicon film growth by low-temperature hot-wire chemical vapor deposition on silicon substrates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We investigate the low-temperature growth of crystalline thin silicon films: epitaxial, twinned, and polycrystalline, by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition (HWCVD).

Improvement of multiplex semi-nested PCR system for screening of rare mutations by high-throughput sequencing

open access: yesBioTechniques, 2019
The CRISPR/Cas9 system is an efficient gene-editing method, but it is difficult to obtain mutants for some specific species and special genome structures.
