Although dimethyl sulfoxide was first synthesized in 1866, it remained a curiosity for many years. Recently, however, the group of lower aliphatic sulfoxides has been the object of increased attention. Availability of cheap dimethyl sulfide from the “black liquor” of sulfite pulp manufacture prompted research which led to the development of ...

Extraction of glycogen with dimethyl sulfoxide
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1962Abstract Glycogen has been isolated from rat livers by dimethyl sulfoxide extraction in a form which appears to be more representative of “native” glycogen than that isolated by other methods. Evidence has been obtained that the normal type of alkaline degradation might partially be the cause of the lower molecular weight of classical Pfluger ...

Denaturation of RNA with dimethyl sulfoxide
Biopolymers, 1968AbstractThe denaturation of single‐stranded and double‐stranded RNA's in solutions with varying proportions of dimethyl sulfoxide has been followed by changes in absorbancy, optical rotation, and—with a double‐stranded form of bacteriophage of MS2 RNA— infectivity for bacterial spheroplasts.

DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE ALTERATION OF COLLAGEN
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1983In vitro incubation of human scar in our laboratory with 99% DMSO demonstrated, by electron microscopy, the disruption of the collagen fibers. This may prove to be a useful preparatory step for selective enzymatic assault upon exuberant or undesirable scar tissue in the clinical setting. Further study of this concept is planned.
