A New Source of Elemol Rich Essential Oil and Existence of Multicellular Oil Glands in Leaves of the Dioscorea Species

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2013
Dioscorea species is a very important food and drug plant. The tubers of the plant are extensively used in food and drug purposes owing to the presence of steroidal constituent’s diosgenin in the tubers. In the present study, we report for the first time

Fermented Plant‐Based Milks: A Review of Physicochemical and Technological Aspects to Sensory and Probiotic Attributes

open access: yesFood Bioengineering, Volume 5, Issue 2, Page 314-334, June 2026.
Technological and biotechnological processes, including fermentation with selected starter cultures, convert diverse plant raw materials into fermented plant‐based milks. These processes enhance nutritional profiles, functional and probiotic compounds, and improve physicochemical and sensory properties, supported by predictive modeling to optimize ...

Chemical Composition, Amino Acids, Phenolic Profiles and Bioavailability of Minerals in Livingstone Potato (Plectranthus esculentus) as Affected by Different Processing Techniques

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, Volume 2, Issue 2, Page 186-199, June 2026.
Boiling retained the nutrients and polyphenol compounds in Plectranthus esculentus tubers better than frying or roasting. A bioavailability study showed that the phytates and oxalates in the tuber may not affect the bioavailabilities of calcium, zinc, or iron in Plectranthus esculentus tubers when eaten.

Genome Editing in Root and Tuber Crop Development in Sub‐Saharan Africa

open access: yesPlant-Environment Interactions, Volume 7, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Precision genome editing, particularly using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR‐associated protein 9 (Cas9), is advancing crop improvement by enabling targeted and efficient genetic modifications. Root and tuber crops such as potato, cassava, sweet potato, and yam are vital for global food and nutritional

Rapid and accurate classification of Dioscorea species using attenuated total reflection-fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy integrated with chemometric analysis and convolutional neural network (CNN)

open access: yesApplied Food Research
Background: Due to its high market demand and nutritional value, Chinese yam (Dioscorea oppositifolia) is often adulterated with Dioscorea hamiltonii, Dioscorea fordii, and Dioscorea alata. Discriminating among Dioscorea species is challenging because of

Henry Trimen: Under‐appreciated pioneer in the typification of Linnaean plant names?

open access: yesTAXON, Volume 75, Issue 3, June 2026.
Abstract In 1887, Henry Trimen published a paper summarising the contents of the Hermann Herbarium, in what is now the Natural History Museum, London (BM), in terms of the plant names published by Linnaeus. Trimen referred to the Hermann specimens as types of Linnaeus's names.
