Modelling the kinetics of thin-layer yam (dioscorea rotundata) drying

open access: yesIngeniería e Investigación, 2008
Thin-layer yam (varieties 9811-089 and 9811-091) drying was evaluated in a laboratory-type dish dryer at 45°C, 55°C and 70°C and 1 m/s average air speed in the Universidad de Cordoba’s Applied Engineering laboratory. The samples were 3.19 cm long, 0.5 cm thick, in 0.5x3x5 cm slices.

Expected yield and economic improvements of a yam seed system in West Africa using agro‐physiological modelling

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 3, Page 679-688, May 2025.
Yam is a major tropical root crop and a staple food for millions of people in West Africa. The model used in this study shows that promoting the use of improved seed tubers would help increase yields and profitability for farmers. This could lead to improved food security, increased income and higher standards of living.

Identification of candidate flowering and sex genes in white Guinea yam (D. rotundata Poir.) by SuperSAGE transcriptome profiling.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Dioecy (distinct male and female individuals) and scarce to non-flowering are common features of cultivated yam (Dioscorea spp.). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying flowering and sex determination in Dioscorea are largely unknown.

Advancing breeding for climate‐resilient yam production in Côte d'Ivoire

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 3, Page 502-513, May 2025.
Yam plays an important role in ensuring food security in Côte d'Ivoire, serving as a staple crop for 60% of the population and a significant source of income. It holds deep cultural significance for the Akan and Gour ethnic groups. Preserving yam production is essential for both food security and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Landrace diversity and heritage of the indigenous millet crop fonio (Digitaria exilis): Socio‐cultural and climatic drivers of change in the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 3, Page 704-718, May 2025.
White fonio (Digitaria exilis [Kippist] Stapf) is an understudied millet crop, indigenous to West Africa and cultivated in the region largely through traditional practices. This species is climate‐resilient, fast‐growing, nutritionally rich, and provides livelihoods and food security to rural communities.

Studies on the reproductive biology of white yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.)

open access: yesEuphytica, 1992
Investigations were conducted on the identification and distribution of yam natural pollinators, flowering pattern and hybridization of white yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria, in order to provide informations for producing hybrid seeds needed for vam genetic improvement.

Micropropagation of white yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.)

open access: yes, 2019
White yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir.) belongs to the family Dioscoreaceae, genus Dioscorea. It is also known as white Guinea yam, Guinea yam, and 8-months' yam. The center of origin of white yam is in West Africa. D. rotundata, a cultigen, is so close to

Growth and Nutrient Use Efficiencies of Yams (Dioscorea spp.) Grown in Two Contrasting Soils of West Africa

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, 2011
Fertilization is an important management strategy of yams (Dioscorea spp.) especially when grown in degraded soils. A field study evaluated the leaf numbers, leaf area indices, crop growth, yields, and nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) use efficiencies of D.
