La clasificación reciente del ”Grupo de Filogenia de Angiospermas” (APG por sus siglas en inglés) reconoce cuatro géneros en las Dioscoreaceae (Dioscorea, Stenomeris, Tacca y Trichopus). Dioscorea es el único distribuido ampliamente, con cientos de especies (300-?800), llegando a los trópicos y subtrópicos de América.
