AbstractA 50‐year‐old previously well woman developed a sudden onset of ecchymoses and petechiae over the trunk and extremities and gum bleeding. There was no history of alcohol use or drug ingestion. Physical examination was normal except for the ecchymoses, purpuric rash, and gum bleeding.

[Direct Coombs' test in the aged].

Blood samples from 431 persons (age: 78 to 99 years) were examined by the direct anti-human-globulin test (d. AHGT ) with polyspecific and monospecific antisera. Three antibody-mediated positive d. AHGT were found. There was no increase in non antibody-mediated positive complement Coombs reactions in healthy persons of high age.

Abstract. Six patients with hemolytic anemia were found to have positive direct antiglobulin tests with antisera to IgA, in addition to positive reactions with anti‐IgG, ‐IgM or C3 antisera. Absorption studies suggest that IgA exists as a complex with other immunoglobulins.
