Empirical formulation for bead shape prediction in direct energy deposition

open access: yesMechanics & Industry
In the metal deposition process, the bead shape plays a critical role in determining the precision and mechanical properties of the final product. Therefore, prior to additive manufacturing, it is essential to determine an optimal bead shape.

Loose packings of frictional spheres

open access: yes, 2010
We have produced loose packings of cohesionless, frictional spheres by sequential deposition of highly-spherical, monodisperse particles through a fluid. By varying the properties of the fluid and the particles, we have identified the Stokes number (St) -

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Response of a proportional counter to $^{37}$Ar and $^{71}$Ge: measured spectra versus Geant4 simulation

open access: yes, 2016
The energy deposition spectra of $^{37}$Ar and $^{71}$Ge in a miniature proportional counter are measured and compared in detail to the model response simulated with Geant4.

Optical Properties and Analysis of OJL Model’s Electronic inter-band Transition Parameters of TiO2 Films [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Titanium dioxide is a wide band gap semiconductor responsible for the bright white appearance in most substances. This material has many unique properties due to its extra-ordinary chemical stability.

Partitioning of laser energy during directed energy deposition

open access: yesAdditive Manufacturing, 2017
Abstract An energy balance that describes the transfer of energy is proposed for the laser-based directed energy deposition process. The partitioning of laser energy was experimentally measured and accurately validated using a special process calorimeter for Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 625™ alloys. The total energy provided by the laser was partitioned as:

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Demonstration and Comparison of Operation of Photomultiplier Tubes at Liquid Argon Temperature

open access: yes, 2011
Liquified noble gases are widely used as a target in direct Dark Matter searches. Signals from scintillation in the liquid, following energy deposition from the recoil nuclei scattered by Dark Matter particles (e.g.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Process Hafnium Oxide Insulator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors with solution-process hafnium oxide (HfOx) as gate insulating layer have been demonstrated. The solution-process HfOx could not only exhibit a high-permittivity (κ = 11) dielectric constant but also has ...
