Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

2012
Abstract Direct methanol fuel cells are suitable power sources for a range of mobile applications, due to the convenience of storage of the liquid fuel. The chapter reviews the principles of operation and models which have been developed to create viable methanol powered fuel cells.

The direct methanol fuel cell

IEE Colloquium on Compact Power Sources, 1996
The principle fuel used to derive power from fuel cells has to date been hydrogen. Hydrogen is generated primarily by the reformation of hydrocarbon based feedstocks such as methane and methanol. Such generation immediately suggests a loss in efficiency in fuel utilisation as well as increased system cost. Thus the direct use of hydrocarbon based fuels

Methanol concentration estimation in a direct methanol fuel cell system

2014 American Control Conference, 2014
An inferential sensor based on state estimation techniques is proposed for measuring the methanol concentration in an open-cathode direct methanol fuel cell. The strategies considered include full-state and reduced-state Luenberger observers along with a proportional-integral observer.

Systematic Experimental Analysis of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell

Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology, 2006
Different studies are carried out to compare the performances of different fuel cell constructive materials and operating conditions. In this work, a methodology for the characterization of DMFC experimental results in term of uncertainty and repeatability and for a systematic analysis of operating condition influence on performance is presented.

Performance Modeling of a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Fueled With Methanol and Ethanol

Journal of Fuel Cell Science and Technology, 2014
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are becoming a choice of a power source in the field of power electronics, and portable devices because of their high energy density. The benefits of using a fuel cell toward the environment will be enhanced if the fuel used for its application comes from renewable sources such as ethanol.

Pyramidal direct methanol fuel cells

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2006
Abstract The main concept of this article is to allow for the optimized tree-like design of the flow distributors to actually define the shape of the fuel cell, thereby eliminating problems associated with the mismatch between a predecided rectangular shape and a functionally preferred channel distribution system.

Performance of a direct methanol fuel cell

Journal of Applied Electrochemistry, 1998
The performance of a direct methanol fuel cell based on a Nafion® solid polymer electrolyte membrane (SPE) is reported. The fuel cell utilizes a vaporized aqueous methanol fuel at a porous Pt–Ru–carbon catalyst anode. The effect of oxygen pressure, methanol/water vapour temperature and methanol concentration on the cell voltage and power output is ...

Sensors for direct methanol fuel cells

Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, 2014
Abstract A sensor can be used to enhance the performance of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Sensors function as alarms for various problems encountered with DMFCs, of which methanol crossover is the primary problem. These sensors can significantly improve DMFC operation, thereby promoting the commercialisation of this product.
