Abstract Direct methanol fuel cells are suitable power sources for a range of mobile applications, due to the convenience of storage of the liquid fuel. The chapter reviews the principles of operation and models which have been developed to create viable methanol powered fuel cells.

Methanol concentration estimation in a direct methanol fuel cell system
2014 American Control Conference, 2014An inferential sensor based on state estimation techniques is proposed for measuring the methanol concentration in an open-cathode direct methanol fuel cell. The strategies considered include full-state and reduced-state Luenberger observers along with a proportional-integral observer.

In this work, a methodology for the characterization of DMFC experimental results in term of uncertainty and repeatability and for a systematic analysis of operating condition influence on performance is presented.

Sensors function as alarms for various problems encountered with DMFCs, of which methanol crossover is the primary problem.
