The impact of systemic long‐term medications for the development of age‐related macular degeneration

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Age‐related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of central vision loss in the elderly; however, the systemic factors that modulate its incidence and progression remain unclear. We sought to determine whether long‐term use of systemic medications, including diabetes and antithrombotic medications, corticosteroids and ...

P‐CAB vs. PPI for Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding Prevention in Patients With Atherothrombotic Disease on Antithrombotic Therapy: A CDM Cohort Study

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, EarlyView.
In patients with atherothrombotic disease on antithrombotic therapy, P‐CABs demonstrated a significantly superior protective effect against clinically significant upper GI haemorrhage compared to PPIs (aHR 0.22; p = 0.016). This real‐world study highlights P‐CABs as a more potent gastroprotective strategy for high‐risk populations requiring intensive ...

Hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide) use in adults with haemoglobin SC disease: A real‐world study in Quebec

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Summary Haemoglobin SC (HbSC) disease is the second most prevalent form of sickle cell disease, but evidence for hydroxyurea (hydroxycarbamide; HU) to prevent pain episodes was limited until the prospective identification of variables as outcomes for treatment (PIVOT) trial.

Comparative atrial fibrillation risk across Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors in B‐cell malignancies: A nationwide population‐based study

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Real‐world nationwide data in B‐cell malignancies reveal a markedly increased 1‐year incidence of hospitalized atrial fibrillation with ibrutinib compared with second‐generation Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors and venetoclax, arguing for closer cardiac surveillance.

Identification, reliability, and validity of drug–drug interaction checkers in chronic diseases: A systematic review

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Abstract Drug–drug interactions (DDIs) pose major risks in chronic disease management where polypharmacy is common. Although digital DDI tools are used widely to aid healthcare professionals, tools rely on theoretical interactions. This limitation questions their reliability and validity for clinical relevancy.
