Prestressed Concrete Members in Direct Tension

Journal of the Structural Division, 1979
At first glance the notion of using prestressed concrete in tension members is something of an enigma. Yet prestressed concrete can be used to take advantage of the strength of high tensile steel and produce members having any desired stiffness. Examples of applications are considered.

Direct tension test of concrete

2010
The measured tensile strength of concrete is dependent on the test method used. Compared with indirect methods, the direct tension test method gives results closer to the true tensile strength under pure tension condition. Herein, a new direct tension test method for prismatic specimens that uses bonded steel end plates to apply tension load to the ...

An Unconfined Direct Tension Test for Compacted Clays

Journal of Testing and Evaluation, 1974
Abstract Although problems associated with total stress tension arise in soil structures such as earth embankments and multilayer pavements, no standard tension test for soils exists. An unconfined direct tension test, either strain controlled or load controlled, is described, which can be used to determine the tensile (total) stress ...

Compactly Supported Splines with Tension Properties on a Three-Direction Mesh

2010
In this paper we show that for a regular triangulation it is possible to construct composite triangular C1 functions with local tension properties which are non-negative and compactly supported. Moreover, they form a partition of unity and reproduce first degree polynomials.

Single-bolt tension joint tests on pultruded GRP plate — effects of tension direction relative to pultrusion direction

Composite Structures, 1998
Abstract The literature on single-bolt tension joints in structural grade pultruded GRP plate is reviewed and the differences between the main investigations are highlighted. Details are given of the test setup and the joint configurations used in a series 54 such tests on single-bolt joints in which the angle between the pultrusion and tension axes (

Tensions in the Role of the IMF and Directions for Reform

World Economics Journal, 2005
While the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has evolved considerably since its foundation 60 years ago, the past few years have brought fresh challenges. This paper discusses four key areas in which developments have led to a rethinking of the institution’s role: the emerging market financial crises, the changing role of conditionality, the ...
