Multi-phase motors are usually designed to have the concentrated winding and non-sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution in order to maximize the torque per ampere.

Direct torque control (DTC) for six-phase symmetrical induction machine under open phase fault
MELECON 2008 - The 14th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference, 2008In this paper, a new direct torque control (DTC) algorithm for six phase induction machines (6PIM) when one phase is lost will be introduced. The machine has two sets of three phase windings spatially shifted by 60deg electrical degrees. A general decoupled model of the induction machine with up to four open phases is given.

In the segmented IPM machine, the pole magnets are segmented to provide an improved flux-weakening capability to the rotor.
