Interactive animation on Directional derivatives & Level curves

open access: yes, 2021
We present our short series of interactive animations on directional derivatives and level curves. This visualisation was developed for students of first-year mathematics courses at the Delft University of Technology.

Bifurcation Analysis of Time-Delayed Non-Commensurate Caputo Fractional Bi-Directional Associative Memory Neural Networks Composed of Three Neurons

open access: yesFractal and Fractional
We are concerned in this paper with the stability and bifurcation problems for three-neuron-based bi-directional associative memory neural networks that are involved with time delays in transmission terms and possess Caputo fractional derivatives of non ...

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Directional derivatives and higher order chain rules for abelian functor calculus

open access: yes, 2018
In this paper, we consider abelian functor calculus, the calculus of functors of abelian categories established by the second author and McCarthy. We carefully construct a category of abelian categories and suitably homotopically defined functors, and ...

A genus six cyclic tetragonal reduction of the Benney equations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A reduction of Benney’s equations is constructed corresponding to Schwartz–Christoffel maps associated with a family of genus six cyclic tetragonal curves.

On weak subdifferentials, directional derivatives, and radial epiderivatives for nonconvex functions

open access: yes, 2009
In this paper we study relations between the directional derivatives, the weak subdifferentials, and the radial epiderivatives for nonconvex real-valued functions.

Fractional Powers of the Directional Derivative and a Maxwell–Gegenbauer Multipole Identity

open access: yesFractal and Fractional
We study fractional and complex powers of a fixed directional derivative in Rd, defined via a Marchaud-type singular integral representation. Under explicit convergence assumptions, this yields a pointwise nonlocal realization along rays.

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Improved Directional Derivatives for Modifier-Adaptation Schemes [PDF]

open access: yes
The modifier-adaptation methodology enables real-time optimization (RTO) of plant operation in the presence of considerable plant-model mismatch. It requires the estimation of plant gradients.

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.
