Reducing Artisanal Fishery Impact on Marine Community: New Data from Comparison of Innovative and Traditional Gear

open access: yesFishes
Fishery resources overexploitation, together with bycatch and discards, have an impact on marine ecosystems. The adoption of technologically innovative gears is a possible solution to reduce the discard and to enhance the sustainability of fishery ...

A quantitative modulus of continuity for the two-phase Stefan problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We derive the quantitative modulus of continuity $$ \omega(r)=\left[ p+\ln \left( \frac{r_0}{r} \right) \right]^{-\alpha (n,p)}, $$ which we conjecture to be optimal, for solutions of the $p$-degenerate two-phase Stefan problem.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Avaliação da decomposição de plantas aquáticas no solo através da liberação de CO2 Evaluation of aquatic plant decomposition on soil through CO2 release

open access: yesPlanta Daninha, 2005

Reduction of Classical Measurement Noise via Quantum-Dense Metrology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Quantum-dense metrology (QDM) constitutes a special case of quantum metrology in which two orthogonal phase space projections of a signal are simultaneously sensed beyond the shot noise limit.

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Causes of blood product discard in the blood bank of tertiary health center over 5 years: A retrospective study

open access: yesMGM Journal of Medical Sciences, 2023
Background: Blood and its constituents are necessary for human survival, and no major surgical procedure can be completed without using blood. Wastage of blood and blood products should ideally never occur.

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Ecological Impacts of Artisanal Shrimp Trawling on Macroinvertebrate Bycatch in the Southwestern Atlantic, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
Artisanal shrimp trawling represents an activity of considerable socioeconomic relevance, particularly in coastal communities. However, it is a non-selective fishing method known for capturing large amounts of bycatch, which negatively impacts benthic ...

RTP control protocol (RTCP) extended report (XR) block for independent reporting of burst/fgp discard metrics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This document defines an RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) Extended Report (XR) block that allows the reporting of burst/gap discard metrics independently of the burst/gap loss metrics for use in a range of RTP ...
