A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Multiple Sclerosis Relapse Activity After Ozanimod Discontinuation in DAYBREAK Trial Participants

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
Multiple Sclerosis Relapse Activity After Ozanimod Discontinuation in DAYBREAK Trial Participants. ABSTRACT Objective Return of disease activity is expected when patients discontinue disease‐modifying therapy (DMT) for multiple sclerosis (MS). Some MS DMTs are associated with higher‐than‐expected disease activity (rebound) after discontinuation.

On Macroscopic Complexity and Perceptual Coding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The theoretical limits of 'lossy' data compression algorithms are considered. The complexity of an object as seen by a macroscopic observer is the size of the perceptual code which discards all information that can be lost without altering the perception

A Systematic Comparison of Alpha‐Synuclein Seed Amplification Assays for Increasing Reproducibility

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Seed amplification assays (SAAs) enable ultrasensitive detection of misfolded α‐synuclein across biofluids and tissues. Yet, heterogeneity in protocols limits cross‐study comparability and clinical translation. Here, we review α‐synuclein SAA methods and their performance across various biological matrices.

Relative efficiency of square-mesh codends in an artisanal fishery in southern Brazil Eficiencia relativa de copos de malla cuadrada en una pesquería artesanal del sur de Brasil

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2012
The relative efficiency of two square-mesh codend designs with the same circumference (~2 m) but different mesh sizes and materials (32 mm polyethylene-PE and 30 mm polyamide-PA) was tested in an artisanal shrimp trawl fishery in Paraná, southern Brazil.

Discards of Spanish trawler fleets operating in the Bay of Biscay in 2000

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2006
A stratified sampling programme by gear and port was carried out by observers on board vessels in 2000 to study the discard behaviour of trawler fleets operating off Spanish North Atlantic coasts. No relationship between discards in weight or numbers and
