Resolving Multiphase Flow through Packed Bed of Solid Particles Using eXtended Discrete Element Method with Porosity Calculation

open access: yes, 2017
Multiphase flow reactors such as trickle bed reactors are frequently used reactors in many industries. Understanding the fluid dynamics of these kinds of reactors is necessary to design and optimize them.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Simulation of shockless spalling fragmentation using the Discrete Element Method (DEM)

open access: yes
In the present study a Discrete Element Method (DEM) is considered to model the dynamic behaviour and fragmentation mechanisms of alumina ceramic under high strain-rate shockless loading. GEPI (high-pulsed power) spalling experiments are simulated.

Preliminary investigation on the capability of eXtended Discrete Element method for treating the dripping zone of a blast furnace

open access: yes, 2017
peer reviewedThe role of molten iron and slag in the dripping zone of a blast furnace is very critical to reach a stable operational condition. The existence of several fluid phases and solid particles in the dripping zone of a blast furnace, makes the

Improved velocity-Verlet algorithm for the discrete element method

open access: yesComputer Physics Communications
The Discrete Element Method is widely employed for simulating granular flows, but conventional integration techniques may produce unphysical results for simulations with static friction when particle size ratios exceed $R \approx 3$. These inaccuracies arise because some variables in the velocity-Verlet algorithm are calculated at the half-timestep ...

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Numerical Simulation of Soil-Tool Interaction by Discrete Element Method

Microstructure‐Controlled Crack Propagation and Fracture Resistance in MoSiBTiC Alloy Revealed by Multiscale Extended Finite Element Method Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A two‐dimensional multiscale finite element analysis framework was established for the first‐generation MoSiBTiC alloy, and the mechanical and fracture‐related parameters of the constituent phases were calibrated through experiments and simulations. The framework provides a basis for analyzing crack propagation behavior in its complex microstructure ...

A control volume based formulation of the discrete Kirchoff triangular thin plate bending element

open access: yes, 2009
A control volume method is presented for predicting the displacement and rotation of thin transversely loaded flat plates. The new procedure uses discrete Kirchoff triangle (DKT) elements but introduces a dual mesh of interconnected control volumes (CVs)
