Parallel coupling strategy for multi-physics applications in eXtended Discrete Element Method [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Multi-physics problems containing discrete particles interacting with fluid phases are widely used industry for example in biomass combustion on a moving grate, particle sedimentation, iron production within a blast furnace, and selective laser melting ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Slope Failure of Noncohesive Media Modelled with the Combined Finite–Discrete Element Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Slope failure behaviour of noncohesive media with the consideration of gravity and ground excitations is examined using the two-dimensional combined finite⁻discrete element method (FDEM).

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Macro-Micro Study on Mechanical Properties of Frozen Fine Sandstone Based on DEM Mathematical Model

open access: yesJournal of Function Spaces, 2022
The study of freezing rock mechanical properties is getting more and more urgent because of coal mine construction in western China. Particle discrete element method (DEM) can describe discontinuous medium problem mathematically.

Pharmacological inhibition of the PERK pathway modulates hepatocellular carcinoma growth and immune signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Pharmacological inhibition of PERK in a DEN‐induced mouse model of liver cancer does not reduce tumor burden but alters cellular stress signaling. Despite blocking PERK activity, downstream stress responses, including CHOP expression, remain active, suggesting compensatory mechanisms within the unfolded protein response that may influence tumor ...

Considerations for Discrete Element Modeling of Rock Cutting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This study attempts to build a framework within the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to produce a reliable predictive tool in rock cutting applications, such that the cutting forces and fragmentation process are reasonably estimated. The study is limited to

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Certain Discrete Element Methods in Problems of Fracture Mechanics

open access: yesActa Polytechnica, 2002
In this paper two discrete element methods (DEM) are discussed. The free hexagon element method is considered a powerful discrete element method, which is broadly used in mechanics of granular media.

HYBRID FINITE-DISCRETE ELEMENT MODELLING OF BLAST-INDUCED EXCAVATION DAMAGED ZONE IN THE TOP-HEADING OF DEEP TUNNELS [PDF]

open access: yesCivil Engineering Journal, 2017
A hybrid finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) is introduced to model the excavation damage zone induced by blast in a deep tunnel. The key components of the hybrid finite-discrete element method, i.e. transition from continuum to discontinuum through
