Slope Failure of Noncohesive Media Modelled with the Combined Finite–Discrete Element Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Slope failure behaviour of noncohesive media with the consideration of gravity and ground excitations is examined using the two-dimensional combined finite⁻discrete element method (FDEM).

Determining Parental Factors for Clinical Trial Attrition in Pediatric Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background/Objectives Despite high enrollment rates on Children's Oncology Group (COG) protocols, attrition after initial consent is challenging, introducing bias and prolonging trial completion. While adult oncology literature has identified predictors of withdrawal, little is known about caregiver decision‐making for child participation in ...

Discrete element modeling of deformable particles in YADE

open access: yesSoftwareX, 2017
In this paper we describe the open-source discrete element framework YADE and the implementation of a new deformation engine. YADE is a highly expandable software package that allows the simulation of current industrial problems in the field of granular ...

An energy stable discontinuous Galerkin time-domain finite element method in optics and photonics

open access: yesResults in Applied Mathematics, 2023
In this paper, a time-domain discontinuous Galerkin (TDdG) finite element method for the full system of Maxwell’s equations in optics and photonics is investigated, including a complete proof of a semi-discrete error estimate.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Rod-Bonded Discrete Element Method

open access: yesGraphical Models
The Bonded Discrete Element Method (BDEM) has raised interests in the graphics community in recent years because of its good performance in fracture simulations. However, current explicit BDEM usually needs to work under very small time steps to avoid numerical instability.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Development of the DKMT Element for Error Estimation in Composite Plate Structures

open access: yesInternational Journal of Technology, 2015
This paper presents an application of the Discrete Kirchhoff-Mindlin Triangular (DKMT) element for error estimation in composite structures. The DKMT element passed the patch tests and gave good results in many plate bending applications.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Research of Caving Methods Based on Discrete Element

open access: yesGong-kuang zidonghua, 2010
The paper introduced three kinds of different methods of caving methods, namely single-interval caving,single-order caving and multi-interval caving. It used discrete element PFC3D software to simulate the three kinds of caving methods, obtained the ...
