Modeling suspected malaria cases in Papua province with second order Besag-York-Mollie 2 spatial regression

open access: yesInternational Journal of Applied Mathematics, Sciences, and Technology for National Defense
The number of malaria cases in Indonesia has increased in recent years. The highest malaria cases in Indonesia are in the eastern region, namely Papua Province, where in 2021 there were 86,022 cases.

Graph-based multivariate conditional autoregressive models

open access: yesStatistical Theory and Related Fields, 2019
The conditional autoregressive model is a routinely used statistical model for areal data that arise from, for instances, epidemiological, socio-economic or ecological studies.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Alcohol Abuse Disorder Prevalence and its Distribution Across Portugal

open access: yesRevstat Statistical Journal, 2015
Disease mapping is linked to two other scientific areas: small area estimation and ecological-spatial regression. This paper reviews similarities and differences among them.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Disease mapping models: an empirical evaluation. Disease Mapping Collaborative Group.

open access: yesStatistics in medicine, 2000
The analysis of small area disease incidence has now developed to a degree where many methods have been proposed. However, there are few studies of the relative merits of the methods available. While many Bayesian models have been examined with respect to prior sensitivity, it is clear that wider comparisons of methods are largely missing from the ...

Boundary detection in disease mapping studies

open access: yes, 2011
In disease mapping, the aim is to estimate the spatial pattern in disease risk over an extended geographical region, so that areas with elevated risks can be identified.
