In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Estimates of epidemiological parameters for H5N1 influenza in humans: a rapid review

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Background The ongoing H5N1 panzootic in mammals has amplified zoonotic pathways to facilitate human infection. Characterising key epidemiological parameters for H5N1 is critical should it become widespread.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

BRD4 modulator ZL0580 and LEDGINs additively block and lock HIV-1 transcription

open access: yesNature Communications
The persistence of HIV-1 in a latent state within long-lived immune cells remains a major barrier to a cure for HIV-1 infection. The “block-and-lock” strategy aims to silence the HIV-1 provirus permanently using latency promoting agents (LPAs).

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Cost-effectiveness of maternal vaccine and/or monoclonal antibody strategies against respiratory syncytial virus in Belgian infants

open access: yesnpj Vaccines
The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) burden and cost-effectiveness of infant RSV immunisation was evaluated by comparing seven strategies in terms of costs and Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) from health care payer’s perspective: no universal ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...
