Disease spectrum and medical complaints among migrants: a study from three outpatient clinics for asylum seekers in Berlin, Germany

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health
IntroductionIn 2015, over 20 million people were compelled to flee due to armed conflict and natural disasters. More than one million arrived in Germany, around 55,000 in Berlin.

Intelligent Programmable Membrane Nanosponge for Early Virus Blocking

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A smart programmable nanosponge (ACNPs) displays high‐density viral receptors on its membrane and encapsulates fusion inhibitors to capture virions at the infection source through competitive binding and blocks their entry through protease inhibition for ultra‐early cascade interception. This modular, mucus‐penetrating platform shifts antiviral defence

An outbreak investigation of paediatric severe acute respiratory infections requiring admission to intensive care units – Fiji, May 2016

open access: yesWestern Pacific Surveillance and Response, 2018
Introduction: Influenza-associated severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) are a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. In response to a cluster of SARI cases and deaths in pregnant women, with two deceased cases testing positive for ...

FAM134B Restricts African Swine Fever Virus Capsid Assembly via Reticulophagy and Its Antiviral Activity is Antagonized by the Viral Virulence‐Associated Factor pMGF300‐2R

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT African swine fever (ASF), caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV), is a devastating viral disease in domestic pigs and wild boar. ASFV is a large DNA virus whose capsid assembly takes place within perinuclear viral factories (VFs). Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that reticulophagy confers antiviral activity against multiple RNA ...

Transport–Reaction–Signal Coupling in Lateral Flow Assays for Next‐Generation Point‐of‐Care Diagnostics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Lateral flow assays are evolving into interdisciplinary, system‐level sensing platforms. Recent innovations are deconstructed through coupled phases of mass transfer, reaction, and signal transduction, revealing interdependence across porous materials, interfacial chemistry, nanolabels, readout devices, and data‐enabled analysis.

Engaging the international community during the 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome outbreak in the Republic of Korea

open access: yesWestern Pacific Surveillance and Response, 2016
The 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in the Republic of Korea, which started with an imported case and spread throughout the country with a total of 186 cases, revealed the vulnerabilities of the health-care system of the country ...

Disease prevention versus data privacy : using landcover maps to inform spatial epidemic models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The availability of epidemiological data in the early stages of an outbreak of an infectious disease is vital for modelers to make accurate predictions regarding the likely spread of disease and preferred intervention strategies.

Sarbecoviruses Suppress Innate Immunity by Recruiting PPM1A to Modulate STAT2 and ORF9b Phosphorylation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sarbecovirus ORF9b recruits host phosphatase PPM1A to suppress innate immunity through dual mechanisms. PPM1A directly dephosphorylates ORF9b to sustain its activity and indirectly downregulates STAT2 phosphorylation to impair interferon signaling. Pharmacological inhibition of PPM1A restores antiviral responses and limits sarbecovirus replication ...

Structure and Biosynthesis of Mangotoxin Produced by the Plant Pathogen Pseudomonas syringae

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
The structure of mangotoxin remained elusive for over two decades. Here, mangotoxin was isolated from the native producer, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, and was determined to be an alkyne‐containing dipeptide. Mangotoxin inhibited the growth of multidrug‐resistant human pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae.
