Lattice Design in High-energy Particle Accelerators

open access: yes, 2014
This lecture gives an introduction into the design of high-energy storage ring lattices. Applying the formalism that has been established in transverse beam optics, the basic principles of the development of a magnet lattice are explained and the ...

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Detection of Vacuum Birefringence with Intense Laser Pulses

open access: yes, 2004
We propose a novel technique that promises hope of being the first to directly detect a polarization in the quantum electrodynamic (QED) vacuum. The technique is based upon the use of ultra-short pulses of light circulating in low dispersion optical ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Universality and non-differentiability: A new perspective on angular dispersion in optics [PDF]

open access: yesAPL Photonics
Angular dispersion (AD) is a ubiquitous phenomenon in optics after light traverses a diffractive or dispersive device, whereby each wavelength propagates at a different angle.

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

Achromatic telescopic squeezing scheme and application to the LHC and its luminosity upgrade

open access: yesPhysical Review Special Topics. Accelerators and Beams, 2013
A novel optics concept, the achromatic telescopic squeezing (ATS) scheme has been invented in the context of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) upgrade studies, and chosen as the baseline scheme for the optics and layout of the recently approved high ...

Optics measurements for the LHC beam in the TT2-TT10 line and effect of the QKE58 suppression. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Dispersion and optics measurements in TT2-TT10 have been performed for the fast extracted LHC proton beam, to investigate the effect of the QKE58 doublet suppression in the PS (foreseen in 2007) in term of change in the optics parameters at the beginning

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Dispersion-Cancelled and Dispersion-Sensitive Quantum Optical Coherence Tomography

open access: yesOptics Express, 2004
Quantum optical coherence tomography (QOCT) makes use of an entangled twin-photon light source to carry out axial optical sectioning. We have probed the longitudinal structure of a sample comprising multiple surfaces in a dispersion-cancelled manner while simultaneously measuring the group-velocity dispersion of the interstitial media between the ...
