Can dissimilarity indexes resolve the issue of when to chain price indexes? [PDF]

open access: yesEconomics Letters, 2013
Chaining is used in index number construction to update weights and link new items into an index. However, chained indexes can suffer from, sometimes substantial, drift. The Consumer Price Index Manual (ILO, 2004) recommends the use of dissimilarity indexes to determine when chaining is appropriate.

SDDD: A new dissimilarity index for the comparison of speech spectra

Pattern Recognition Letters, 1988
Abstract SDDD, an index for the comparison of speech spectra, is introduced in this paper. Its discriminatory ability is established by comparing SDDD with the best classical index on the basis of a speaker-recognition experiment using Long Term Average Spectra.

Visual Conspicuity Index: Spatial Dissimilarity, Distance, and Central Bias

IEEE Signal Processing Letters, 2011
We propose an image conspicuity index that combines three factors: spatial dissimilarity, spatial distance and central bias. The dissimilarity between image patches is evaluated in a reduced dimensional principal component space and is inversely weighted by the spatial separations between patches.

STATISTICAL COMPARISON OF THE INDEX OF DISSIMILARITY OF SCHOOL DESEGREGATION AND PERCENTAGES OF PUPILS

open access: yesPsychological Reports, 1990
This study examined the statistical validity of the school desegregation Index of Dissimilarity when applied to data from the Cincinnati, Ohio school district. Testing use of this Index against inferential statistics indicates the Index does not measure school desegregation.

How useful are approximations to mean and variance of the index of dissimilarity?

Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, 2008
Sociologists, demographers, and economists often use the index of dissimilarity, D, to describe the extent of racial, ethnic, spatial, or areal dissimilarity (or segregation) of different socio-economic groups. Derivation of the mean and variance of D to develop inference techniques has been a subject of studies for over three decades.
