The Balassa index meets the dissimilarity Theil index: a decomposition methodology for location studies [PDF]
It is well known that the broad concept of localisation has two connotations, namely, regional specialisation and industrial concentration. The main purpose of this paper is to introduce an entropy index of overall localisation suitable to conceptualise specialisation and concentration as the two sides of the same medal in a nested geographical ...

On the Upward Bias of the Dissimilarity Index and Its Corrections
Sociological Methods & Research, 2014The dissimilarity index of Duncan and Duncan is widely used in a broad range of contexts to assess the overall extent of segregation in the allocation of two groups in two or more units. Its sensitivity to random allocation implies an upward bias with respect to the unknown amount of systematic segregation.

A Temporal Perspective on the Properties of the Index of Dissimilarity
Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, 1983It is demonstrated that the index of dissimilarity ( D), the most commonly used measure of residential segregation, is generally sensitive to the effects of population composition. D is independent of proportion black in an extreme case considered by Duncan and Duncan, but is a logarithmic function of proportion black in two other extreme cases. In the

Fault Detection for Batch Process Based on Dissimilarity Index
2005 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2006The methods for batch processes monitoring based on multivariate techniques always have two assumptions. One is that batches must have equal duration. The other one is the normal distribution of batch process data. However, those are not always satisfied in practice.

Gray Level Local Dissimilarity Map and Global Dissimilarity Index for Quality of Medical Images
IFAC proceedings volumes, 2009Abstract In order to evaluate performance quality of coding techniques, it is needed to have a good global index and a local index allowing the localisation of the distortions. In this study, a local dissimilarity map is presented for gray-level images.

On the upward bias of the dissimilarity index
2012In literature it is common to think about segregation as the outcome of a stochastic allocation process, characterized by the preferences and the constraints of both the individuals and the allocation units. In this perspective, several authors have already documented, using simulations, that the observed value of the Duncan & Duncan dissimilarity ...

Indexing Techniques for Non-metric Music Dissimilarity Measures
2010Many dissimilarity measures suitable for music retrieval do not satisfy all properties of a metric. This rules out the use of many established indexing structures, most of which rely on metricity. In this chapter, we give an overview of some existing approaches to building an indexing structure that makes efficient retrieval possible even if the ...
