Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Single spin universal Boolean logic

open access: yes, 2008
Recent advances in manipulating single electron spins in quantum dots have brought us close to the realization of classical logic gates based on representing binary bits in spin polarizations of single electrons.

Neutrinos From Individual Gamma-Ray Bursts in the BATSE Catalog [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We calculate the neutrino emission from individual gamma-ray bursts observed by the BATSE detector on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Neutrinos are produced by photoproduction of pions when protons interact with photons in the region where the kinetic

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of energy dissipation characteristics in granite under high confining pressure cyclic load

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2020
With cyclic high in-situ stress, the rock will damage and lead to serious engineering geological disasters. A property of rock failure is the rock damage evolution driven by energy.

The influence of particle properties on pressure signals in dense gas-fluidised beds: a computer simulation study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
A hard-sphere discrete particle model of a gas-fluidised bed was used in order to study the influence of particle properties on pressure signals in dense gasfluidised beds.

Loose mechanochemical coupling of molecular motors

open access: yes, 2011
In living cells, molecular motors convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Its thermodynamic energy efficiency, i.e. the ratio of output mechanical work to input chemical energy, is usually high.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

An energy description of wear mechanisms and its applications to oscillating sliding contacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
To quantify wear rates, the Archard approach is classically applied. It relates the wear volume to the product of the sliding distance and the normal load.

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.
