Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Continuity bounds on the quantum relative entropy

open access: yes, 2005
The quantum relative entropy is frequently used as a distance, or distinguishability measure between two quantum states. In this paper we study the relation between this measure and a number of other measures used for that purpose, including the trace ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

To dendrogram or not? Consensus methods show that is the question needed to move functional diversity metrics forward

open access: yesIdeas in Ecology and Evolution, 2015
Functional diversity indices have become important tools for measuring variation in species characteristics that are relevant for ecosystem services.

Analysis of environmental sustainability of European Union member states using AHP-TOPSIS methods according to world development indicators

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Communications
Environmental sustainability has become a pressing policy issue for the European Union (EU), yet robust, comparative evaluations among member states remain limited.

Research on Evaluation of Sustainable Development of New Urbanization from the Perspective of Urban Agglomeration under the Pythagorean Fuzzy Sets

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2021
In this study, considering the traditional geometric operation laws and Pythagorean fuzzy information, we propose a variety of new distance measures of Pythagorean fuzzy sets such as generalized Pythagorean fuzzy geometric distance (GPFGD) measures and ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Detecting independence of random vectors: generalized distance covariance and Gaussian covariance

open access: yes, 2018
Distance covariance is a quantity to measure the dependence of two random vectors. We show that the original concept introduced and developed by Sz\'{e}kely, Rizzo and Bakirov can be embedded into a more general framework based on symmetric L\'{e}vy ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
