Lattice Boltzmann methods for multiphase flow and phase-change heat transfer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Over the past few decades, tremendous progress has been made in the development of particle-based discrete simulation methods versus the conventional continuum-based methods. In particular, the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has evolved from a theoretical

Contextual Distinctiveness Affects the Memory Advantage for Vocal Melodies

open access: yesAuditory Perception & Cognition, 2019
ABSTRACTMemory is affected by stimulus salience. For example, vocal melodies are remembered better than instrumental melodies, presumably because of their status as biologically significant signals...

Distinct role of the right temporoparietal junction in advantageous and disadvantageous inequity: A tDCS study

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2023
Fairness is a hallmark of humans' ability to maintain cooperative relationships with large numbers of unrelated others. It influences many aspects of daily life, from how people share their resources with partners to how policymakers shape income distribution policy.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Framework

open access: yesDANCE, ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING, 2018
This chapter sets out and motivates a framework for naturalizing content, ‘varitel semantics’. It is based on the explanatory advantages that flow from realism about the vehicles of content.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

ABOUT “LEGITIMIZATION” OF NUMERICAL MODELLING OF WIND IMPACTS ON BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES IN DESIGN CODES

open access: yesInternational Journal for Computational Civil and Structural Engineering, 2019
The distinctive paper is detoded to problem of “legitimization” of numerical modelling of wind loads and impacts on buildings and structures. General information about computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its development prospects is presented.

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,
