The effect of compressibility on turbulent shear flow: a rapid-distortion-theory and direct-numerical-simulation study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The influence of compressibility upon the structure of homogeneous sheared turbulence is investigated. For the case in which the rate of shear is much larger than the rate of nonlinear interactions of the turbulence, the modification caused by ...

Temporal dependent rate-distortion optimization based on distortion backward propagation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) is a crucial technique in block based hybrid video encoders. However, the widely used independent RDO is far from obtaining optimal coding performance. To improve the rate-distortion (R-D) performance of high efficiency ...

Automatic Lens Distortion Correction Using One-Parameter Division Models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We present a method to automatically correct the radial distortion caused by wide-angle lenses using the distorted lines generated by the projection of 3D straight lines onto the image.

Analytical model for calculating the nonlinear distortion in silicon-based electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this study, an analytical model for calculating the nonlinear harmonic/intermodulation distortion for RF signals in silicon-based electro-optic modulators is investigated by considering the nonlinearity on the effective index change curve with the ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Linearity and mobility degradation in strained Si MOSFETs with thin gate dielectrics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
As gate dielectrics are scaled to a few atomic layers and the channel doping is increased to mitigate short channel effects, high vertical electric fields cause considerable mobility degradation through surface-roughness scattering in silicon MOSFETs ...

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Investigation of thermal techniques to mitigate buckling distortion in welding panels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This thesis describes the advancements of the application of thermal tensioning techniques to different weld geometries in order to eliminate buckling distortion.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

RoundMi: A quantitative method to analyze mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
RoundMi is a workflow for rapid analysis of mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells. By combining adaptive preprocessing with automated segmentation and quantification, it enables accurate measurements from single focal plane images, reducing acquisition time and computational demands while remaining compatible with high‐throughput fixed and live ...
