Enhanced-Backscattering and Enhanced-Backreflection Fibers for Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Lightwave Technology, 2023
Most distributed optical fiber sensors rely on commercially available telecom fibers, which are low-loss, inexpensive, and standardized. In the last few years, significant effort has been made to develop optical fibers optimized for specific sensing applications, with the view of improving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) or extending the distance over ...

Stretchable distributed fiber-optic sensors

Science, 2020
Colorful changes Distributed fiber-optic sensors have been used for monitoring mechanical deformations in stiff infrastructures such as bridges, roads, and buildings, but they either are limited to measuring one variable or require complex optics to measure multiple properties. Bai et al.

Interferometric distributed optical-fiber sensor

Applied Optics, 1996
An interferometric technique is described for detecting and locating perturbations along an optical fiber. This distributed sensor, based on a modified fiber-ring interferometer, has a position-dependent response to time-varying disturbances such as strain or temperature.

Study on distributed optic fiber gas sensors

2009 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO), 2009
Online detection of gas concentrations is important research topic recently. Based on the analysis of near infrared spectral absorption of acetylene, ammonia and carbon monoxide, a system using absorption type optic fiber for high sensitivity distributed detection of gases with wideband light source is demonstrated.

Distributed Optical Fiber Sensors for PCB-Strain Analysis

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2019
Printed circuit board (PCB)-strain tests are part of the quality control processes to detect and identify predamages on manufactured products. Such tests are commonly performed by instrumenting a PCB, and subjecting it to the manufacturing conditions. Among the various parameters to evaluate on the production equipment, the induced strain on the PCB is

Fiber Optic Sensors for Distributed and Quasi-distributed Temperature Measurement

2020 IEEE SENSORS, 2020
This work evaluates the performance of distributed fiber optic based-sensors during laser-induced hyperthermia in tissues-simulating phantoms. Standard single-mode Corning SMF-28 and LUNA high definition fiber optic sensor (HD-FOS) were used for distributed sensing with LUNA ODiSI-B interrogator.

Distributed and Multiplexed Fiber-Optic Sensors

Optical Fiber Sensors, 1988
Many authors have recognised the unique advantages afforded in a number of application areas by the use of distributed fiber-optic sensor (DFOS) systems, which can be formed by combining fiber sensing and telemetry [1-11]. Approaches described to date can be categorized as being either 'intrinsic distributed' or 'quasi-distributed'.

A quasi-distributed optical fiber sensor

Smart Materials and Structures, 1994
Quasi-distributed optical fiber sensors using multiple frequency shifters (FS) in a two-mode elliptical core fiber (TMECF) are presented. The sensing measurand is the phase shift between the two propagating modes in the fiber. In the present experimental configuration, four FS provide three independent sensing regions along a single TMECF.

Distributed fiber optic pressure sensor

SPIE Proceedings, 1991
A novel fiber-optic sensor for measuring external pressure distribution along a high-birefringent fiber is proposed, based on the polarization mode conversion due to pressure. The sensor exhibits spatial resolution better than 0.15 m, high signal-to-noise ratio, and wide dynamic range.

Address Challenges in Placing Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors

2020 European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC), 2020
We are the first to investigate a novel problem, called distributed fiber optic sensor placement, in the context of Infrastructure-as-a-Sensor. We propose an ILP-based optimal solution and a close-to-optimal heuristic solution, both of which aim at minimizing the cost of sensors.
