Distributed optical fiber chemical sensor

1996
Techniques for distributed optical fiber chemical sensor development were investigated and a model system for pH measurement was developed and, as a result, discrete distribution signals were obtained. pH indicator fluorescein sodium was chosen for this work because of its well known properties and high fluorescent intensity.

Optimized fiber in a distributed Brillouin fiber-optic sensor

Optical Engineering, 2008
A sensing fiber that has a gradually increasing Brillouin gain-coefficient g B /A eff along its length and that can keep the received Brillouin Stokes power constant in a Brillouin fiber-optic sensor is proposed. This method can be an additional way to further extend the sensing distance of the distributed Brillouin fiber-optic sensor.

Brillouin-based fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor with optical preamplification

Optics Letters, 2000
Optical preamplification has been used in a fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering and the use of direct detection, resulting in improved signal-to-noise ratios. The fiber-based optical preamplifier system comprises a three-port circulator, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier with a small-signal gain of 27 dB ...

Theory of fiber optic radiometry, emissivity of fibers, and distributed thermal sensors

Applied Optics, 1991
This paper formulates a general radiometric theory of multimode step index fibers, covering in particular the region of mid- and far IR fibers. The optical fiber is treated both as a passive waveguide, guiding the external radiation injected into it, as well as an active waveguide, generating internal thermal radiation which is guided to both fiber ...

Distributed fiber-optic intrusion sensor system

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2005
A distributed sensor system for detecting and locating intruders based on the phase-sensitive optical-time-domain reflectometer (/spl phi/-OTDR) is described. The sensing element is a cabled single-mode telecommunications fiber buried along the monitored perimeter. Light pulses from a continuous-wave Er:fiber Fabry-Pe/spl acute/rot laser with a narrow (

Distributed Active Optical Fiber Sensor, for Bending Measurement

2011
A unique and very important feature of fiber-optic technology consists in its capability for long-range distributed sensing. The paper introduces a simple system based on a bendable large mode area (LMA) fiber, meant for a sensing accuracy of the microns order.
