Dynamic simulation of static VAR compensators in distribution systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 1992
A system study guide is provided for the correction of voltage dips due to large motor startups with static VAR compensators (SVCs). The method utilizes times simulations, which are an important aid in the equipment design and specification. The author illustrates the process of setting-up a computer model and performing time simulations.

Distributed Static Series Compensation for distribution network line voltage profile improvement

2011 2nd IEEE PES International Conference and Exhibition on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies, 2011
Finding an optimal location for a Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) device in an electrical network can be a significant concern. In this paper, the use of Distributed Static Series Compensation (DSSC) is suggested to improve the voltage profile in LV 11 kV distribution networks and for network power flow control.

Reactive power compensation of wind energy distribution system using Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM)

2012 IEEE 5th India International Conference on Power Electronics (IICPE), 2012
In recent years generation of electricity using wind power has received considerable attention worldwide. Induction machines are mostly used as generators in wind power based generations, since induction machines have a stability problem as they draw heavy reactive power. To improve stability of the system reactive power compensation is provided.

Consequence of unbalance supplying condition on a distribution static compensator

2004 IEEE 35th Annual Power Electronics Specialists Conference (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37551), 2004
A static compensator (STATCOM) is composed of an AC/DC converter connected to a power system through a transformer to regulate voltage or compensate load reactive power. The applied unbalanced voltages from a distribution feeder would affect the behavior of the converter, both the harmonic performance and converter efficiency. Here we present different

Performance enhancement of wind farm with distribution static compensator

2016 IEEE 1st International Conference on Power Electronics, Intelligent Control and Energy Systems (ICPEICES), 2016
In this paper, dynamic performance of wind farm comprising of three Squirrel Cage Induction Generators (SCIG) is analyzed for grid connected operation. Wind integration causes power imbalances and power system dynamics leading to system instability. The SCIG based wind turbine requires reactive power for magnetization which causes shortage of reactive ...

Improving Distribution System Performance through Static Compensation

1984 American Control Conference, 1984
Control of reactive power (VAR-control) in an electric power system serves three different purposes: 1. To maintain, if possible, unity power factor throughout the system, thus, minimizing reactive line flows and associated real power losses; 2. To maintain a stable and acceptable voltage profile in the system; 3. To maintain operating stability of the

Research and Design of Distributed Static Synchronous Series Compensator

2018 8th International Conference on Power and Energy Systems (ICPES), 2018
The flexible AC transmission system(FACTS) technology can significantly improve the stability and reduce the operation cost of power system. However, there are several disadvantages for concentrated FACTS controller, such as large size and high-voltage insulation. While the distributed FACTS is introduced to fix up the disadvantages above. In the paper,

Modeling and Controller Design of Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator

2006 International Conference on Power System Technology, 2006
Distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) is an effective measure to maintain voltage stability and improve power quality of distribution grid. This paper deals with the modeling and nonlinear controller design of DSTATCOM. A nonlinear dynamic mathematical model of DSTATCOM is obtained by the switching function approach. A reactive-voltage

Predictive current control of distribution static compensator for reactive power compensation

IEE Proceedings - Generation, Transmission and Distribution, 1999
The paper describes modelling and current control techniques of a distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM). Current control is based on the predictive and the space vector pulsewidth modulation (PWM) scheme. The predictive current-controlled PWM D-STATCOM can maintain its performance with reactive power compensation and a fixed switching frequency ...

The feasibility of static compensators for single-phase distribution feeders

Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering, 1992
Investigates the use of small static compensators for the control of voltage on single-phase distribution feeders. A candidate feeder system is examined to determine the type and size of compensator required. The compensator is compared with the present state of the art.
