estar: An R package to measure ecological stability

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Assessing ecological stability is a key task in biodiversity monitoring and conservation. Quantifying stability is not trivial because its different aspects can be measured with various properties. However, to date, no software enables measuring different stability properties on ecological time‐series data.

Stable Isotope Analysis as a Tool to Prevent Illicit Wildlife Trade of Songbirds in Brazil

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Feather isotopes provide clear differences between wild and captive songbirds in Brazil. Combining multiple isotopes improved classification accuracy and revealed individuals falsely declared as captive‐bred. These results demonstrate the potential of isotope analysis to detect wildlife laundering in the bird trade.

Nuestra diversidad lingüística como diversidad biológica

open access: yesWani, 2015

Diagnosing scaling bottlenecks in 10 community conservation initiatives in southern and eastern Africa

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Scaling area‐based conservation, including initiatives led or comanaged by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, is a flagship goal of the Kunming‐Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Conservationists often aspire to scale initiatives, but this is rarely achieved in practice. Identifying and addressing factors that limit initiative adoption (i.e.

Diversidad en convergencia

open access: yesMatrizes, 2014

Addressing environmental misperceptions for nature recovery

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract A poorly understood and systemic challenge to global conservation agreements is shifting baseline syndrome (SBS), wherein people misperceive the extent to which nature has changed. This can diminish societal expectations for nature recovery. We broadened the conceptual framing of SBS beyond the more common elements of nature loss to include ...

Representativeness of the Natura 2000 network for preserving plant biodiversity in the European Union

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The Natura 2000 (N2K) network of protected areas is one of the main tools for area‐based conservation in the European Union (EU), yet its role in preserving plant biodiversity requires better understanding. We examined data kept in the European Vegetation Archive from over 1.2 million vegetation plots and obtained over 14.2 million plant ...

Use of species’ responses to cryptic anthropogenic disturbances for monitoring biodiversity outcomes in tropical forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Measuring area‐based conservation outcomes in tropical forests is challenging due to cryptic human disturbances (e.g., hunting). As a result, comparative studies of management strategies providing quantitative outcomes remain scarce, especially in the Neotropics.

In vitro culture, cryopreservation, and field reintroduction of the endangered Mingan thistle

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Current plant conservation efforts are hindered by, for example, poor seed germination, low viability, and insufficient propagation and preservation technologies. To address these problems, we devised an approach to plant conservation that integrates conservation, preservation, and restoration (CPR), which uses advanced in vitro techniques. We
