Metagenetic analysis of patterns of distribution and diversity of marine meiobenthic eukaryotes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
AimMeiofaunal communities that inhabit the marine benthos offer unique opportunities to simultaneously study the macroecology of numerous phyla that exhibit different life-history strategies.

Rethinking intensification: Biodiversity‐inclusive management sustains coconut yields

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Coconut palm expansion in West Africa will shape rural livelihoods and ecosystems. Our findings show that intensive practices reduce beneficial soil fungi and increase pathogens, threatening long‐term productivity. Lower‐intensity management that retains ground vegetation can sustain or boost yields while improving soil health.

Comparative Analysis of Environmental DNA Metabarcoding and Spectro‐Fluorescence for Phytoplankton Community Assessments

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
Quantifications of phytoplankton biomass and species composition are crucial for monitoring biodiversity and population dynamics in aquatic environments, and both direct microscopic counts and fluorescence‐based methods have been widely used for ...

Diet Assessment Based on Rumen Contents: A Comparison between DNA Metabarcoding and Macroscopy. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Dietary choices are central to our understanding of ecology and evolution. Still, many aspects of food choice have been hampered by time consuming procedures and methodological problems.

Potential Impacts of Low Flows on Fish Foodscapes and Production in a Braided River

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Changes in river discharge affect the physical composition and connectivity of habitats which, in turn, may shape the spatial distribution of fish food abundance, accessibility and quality—the ‘foodscape’—of river ecosystems. However, the influence of river flows on fish foodscapes has received very little attention from scientists. We studied

Management and drivers of change of pollinating insects and pollination services. National Pollinator Strategy: for bees and other pollinators in England, Evidence statements and Summary of Evidence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
These Evidence Statements provide up-to-date information on what is known (and not known) about the status, values, drivers of change, and responses to management of UK insect pollinators (as was September 2018). This document has been produced to inform

DNA metabarcoding of microbial communities for healthcare [PDF]

open access: yesBiopolymers and Cell, 2016
High-throughput sequencing allows obtaining DNA barcodes of multiple species of microorganisms from single environmental samples. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)-based profiling provides new opportunities to evaluate the human health effect of microbial community members affiliated to probiotics. The DNA metabarcoding may serve to a quality control of

Incorporating environmental DNA metabarcoding for improved benthic biodiversity and habitat mapping

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Seafloor imagery is commonly used to collect information about the distribution of benthic organisms in order to generate habitat and biodiversity maps. Recent advances in genomics (e.g., environmental DNA; eDNA) show potential to complement video surveys for habitat mapping, but there have been few examples testing this.

Structure and functional genes associated with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling processes in periphyton: A comparison between natural and artificial rivers

open access: yesRiver, EarlyView.
Network analysis of functional genes among prokaryotes, and eukaryotes in natural and artificial rivers. Abstract Periphyton in aquatic ecosystems plays vital roles in the elemental cycle process and is vulnerable to anthropogenic interference. However, few studies have explored the elemental cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and ...

Tracking Ungulate Diet: Comparing Observational and DNA Metabarcoding Tools

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
Large mammalian herbivores (LMH) are abundant in grazing ecosystems and play a pivotal role in shaping vegetation characteristics. However, accurately determining their diets through traditional methods, such as direct observations, remains challenging ...
