Nonlinear shape restoration for document images

Proceedings CVPR IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 1996
Previous researches on nonlinear shape restoration are based on the assumptions that the original shapes and distortions of the images have known formulations under certain conditions. The main contribution of this research is the development of a new restoration algorithm, called Multi-Steps Restoration.

Towards Restoring Historic Documents Degraded Over Time

Second International Conference on Document Image Analysis for Libraries (DIAL'06), 2006
Resorting to restoration techniques for heritage documents becomes an increasingly urgent need. In fact, these valuable resources for human being are subject to several types of degradations limiting their use. A proposed solution to this problem is the application of restoration techniques on the digital copy of the originally degraded document.

Document Decipherment-restoration: Strip-shredded Document Reconstruction based on Color

IEEE Latin America Transactions, 2013
The strip-shredded document reconstruction is an often problem in questioned document examination. The proposed method uses the color as feature matching and then computes the Nearest-Neighbor algorithm using a distance matrix to carry out the reconstruction. The results reported in this paper achieved 97.68% - RGB and 98.53% - HSV models.

Restoring warped document images through 3D shape modeling

IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, 2006
Scanning a document page from a thick bound volume often results in two kinds of distortions in the scanned image, i.e., shade along the "spine" of the book and warping in the shade area. In this paper, we propose an efficient restoration method based on the discovery of the 3D shape of a book surface from the shading information in a scanned document ...

A Blind Source Separation Technique for Document Restoration

SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, 2019
Summary: We examine an instance of the blind source separation problem, namely, the reconstruction of digital documents degraded by bleed-through and show-through effects. We introduce a nonstationary, locally linear data model and a solution approach based on the assumption of cross-correlated ideal sources.

Restoration and Preservation of Charred Documents

Canadian Society of Forensic Science Journal, 1968
Author SummaryExperiments have been conducted in testing methods for separatil1g adhering sheets of burned papers and observing the effect of further burning in making the text more legible. In addition, means have been developed to preserve fragile burned or ashed papers so that they will not be further damaged through handling and hence be even less ...

Document: Architecture and Monument Restoration (1967)

Future Anterior, 2009
This essay, the third and last of a series of lectures delivered at Colegio Nacional in Mexico City in 1966, laid out what Villagran described as an "authentic theory of monument restoration," which upheld the importance of subjective creativity against the myth of objectivity inherent in the prevailing "zealous" archeological formulas to preserve ...

Geometric and photometric restoration of distorted documents

Tenth IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV'05) Volume 1, 2005
We present a system to restore the 2D content printed on distorted documents. Our system works by acquiring a 3D scan of the document's surface together with a high-resolution image. Using the 3D surface information and the 2D image, we can ameliorate unwanted surface distortion and effects from non-uniform illumination.

Contextual restoration of severely degraded document images

2009 IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2009
We propose an approach to restore severely degraded document images using a probabilistic context model. Unlike traditional approaches that use previously learned prior models to restore an image, we are able to learn the text model from the degraded document itself, making the approach independent of script, font, style, etc.

Restoration of Multispectral Images of Ancient Documents

2022
This thesis is concerned with the restoration of images of historical documents. The ancient writings imaged contain partially faded-out characters or are degraded by background variations. MultiSpectral Imaging (MSI) has proven to be a valuable tool for the non-invasive investigation of such ancient manuscripts, since it can be used to acquire ...
