“I just don’t know if I can do it”: A qualitative exploration of how owners contemplate whether to relinquish their companion dog

open access: yesHuman-Animal Interactions
Background: Relinquishment of companion dogs is a major global animal welfare issue, with dog behaviour a commonly reported factor. Key to reducing relinquishment is an understanding of how people come to the decision to relinquish dogs.

Evolution of facial muscle anatomy in dogs

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance Dogs were shaped during the course of domestication both in their behavior and in their anatomical features. Here we show that domestication transformed the facial muscle anatomy of dogs specifically for facial communication with humans.

Trilostane in Dogs [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 2010
Over the last 10 years, trilostane, a competitive inhibitor of steroid synthesis, is being widely used for the treatment of canine hyperadrenocorticism. Trilostane causes a significant but reversible decrease in cortisol production and a concomitant improvement in clinical signs in most dogs with this common condition.

Effect of Pimobendan in Dogs with Preclinical Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease and Cardiomegaly: The EPIC Study—A Randomized Clinical Trial

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2016
Background Pimobendan is effective in treatment of dogs with congestive heart failure (CHF) secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). Its effect on dogs before the onset of CHF is unknown.

Linked dimers of the AAA+ ATPase Msp1 reveal energetic demands and mechanistic plasticity for substrate extraction from lipid bilayers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells must clear mislocalized or faulty proteins from membranes to survive. The AAA+ ATPase Msp1 performs this task, but dissecting how its six subunits work together is challenging. We engineered linked dimers with varied numbers of functional subunits to reveal how Msp1 subunits cooperate and use energy to extract proteins from the lipid bilayer ...

Impact of Socio-Economic Status on Accessibility of Dog Training Classes

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Behaviour problems are amongst the most common reasons given for relinquishing dogs to rehoming centres. Some behaviour problems may be amenable to being tackled pre-emptively with classes educating owners on basic dog training and understanding ...

Brucellosis in Dogs and Public Health Risk

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
Brucella canis infects dogs and humans. In dogs, it can cause reproductive failure; in humans, it can cause fever, chills, malaise, peripheral lymphadenomegaly, and splenomegaly. B. canis infection in dogs is underrecognized.

Photosynthesis under far‐red light—evolutionary adaptations and bioengineering of light‐harvesting complexes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phototrophs evolved light‐harvesting systems adapted for efficient photon capture in habitats enriched in far‐red radiation. A subset of eukaryotic pigment‐binding proteins can absorb far‐red photons via low‐energy chlorophyll states known as red forms.

Large Dog Relinquishment to Two Municipal Facilities in New York City and Washington, D.C.: Identifying Targets for Intervention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014

Longevity of companion dog breeds: those at risk from early death

open access: yesScientific Reports
The companion dog is one of the most phenotypically diverse species. Variability between breeds extends not only to morphology and aspects of behaviour, but also to longevity.
