Domoic acid: a fascinating marine toxin
Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology, 2001There are indications that toxic algal blooms are increasing because of pollution of coastal waters and worldwide shipping. This mini-review deals with the marine biotoxin domoic acid, also known as amnesic shellfish poison, and its main producing pennate diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia (Bacillariophyceae).

The activation of glutamate receptors by kainic acid and domoic acid
Natural Toxins, 1998The neurotoxins kainic acid and domoic acid are potent agonists at the kainate and alphaamino-5-methyl-3-hydroxyisoxazolone-4-propionate (AMPA) subclasses of ionotropic glutamate receptors. Although it is well established that AMPA receptors mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission at most excitatory synapses in the central nervous system, the ...

Abstract Domoic acid (DA), a congener of the excitotoxin kainic acid (KA), is structurally related to the neurotransmitter glutamate (20,67,92). DA is found in the environment as a product of some sea organisms. This compound was first chemically identified following its isolation in 1957 from the seaweed Chondriaarmata found off the ...

Ultraviolet spectrum of domoic acid
Canadian Journal of Chemistry, 1989The ultraviolet spectrum of aqueous domoic acid solutions has an intense absorption band, whose λmax shifts from 240.0 ± 0.3 nm at pH 1.3 to 244.7 ± 0.3 nm at pH 12.3. At the same time, its εmax increases from 24250 to 26700 L mol−1 cm−1. At pH 7 λmax is 242.8 ± 0.3 nm and εmax is 26035 ± 200 L mol−1 cm−1 Analysis of the variation of λmax and εmax ...

Biosynthesis of domoic acid by the diatom Pseudonitzschia multiseries
Natural Toxins, 1998The biosynthesis of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) in the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries was investigated using 13C- and 14C-labelled precursors. The labelling pattern determined by NMR spectroscopy following incorporation of [1,2-13C2]-acetate showed enrichment of every carbon of DA.

Neuropathology of Excitatory Neurotoxins: The Domoic Acid Model
Toxicologic Pathology, 1990A novel type of intoxication in Canada in 1987 was traced to consumption of cultivated mussels contaminated with the excitotoxin domoic acid. Studies carried out in rats and monkeys revealed that parenterally administered domoic acid induces in rats neuroexcitatory phenomena culminating in seizures. Monkeys respond with gagging, emesis and less clearly

Domoic acid is a potent neurotoxin to neonatal rats
Natural Toxins, 1997Domoic acid induces a time-dependent neuroexcitotoxic effect in neonatal rats characterized by hyperactivity, stereotypic scratching, convulsions, and death with observable behaviors occurring at exposures 40 times lower by body weight in neonates than reported in adults.

New Insight on the Synthesis of Neurotoxins Domoic Acid and Kainic Acid
Protein & Peptide Letters, 2015Mono or di-substituted prolines, namely proline chimeras of natural or synthetic origin, carry the side chain of other specific amino acids on the pyrrolidine ring. Thus, proline chimeras are useful tools for a wide range of chemical and biological applications as chiral synthons or building blocks for peptidomimetic design. We focused our attention on

Pharmacology of systemically administered domoic acid in mice
Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1991Domoic acid, a structural analogue of kainic acid, has been identified as the toxin that poisoned people who consumed contaminated blue mussels harvested from eastern Prince Edward Island in December of 1987. To investigate the pharmacology of domoic acid in vivo we injected groups of mice with serial dilutions of extracts of contaminated mussels and ...

[Domoic acid and human health].
Wei sheng yan jiu = Journal of hygiene research, 2010Domoic acid (DA), structurally related to glutamic and kainic acid, mainly generated by Pseudo nitzschia diatom. It often contaminates halobios such as fish and seashell and cause the Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning in human beings with the consumption of foods contaminated by DA. DA has been detected from seafoods worldwide.
