Structure‐forward targeting of claudins with synthetic binders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Claudins form the paracellular barriers between epithelial and endothelial tissues at tight junctions and are targets for molecular binders with the goal of modulating barrier permeability. Claudin‐binding molecules are relevant in drug delivery or in altering claudin interactions with disease‐causing proteins.

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Brain Stem Death and Organ Donation

open access: yes, 1989
Organs for donation are in short supply in the United Kingdom, resulting in allegations that relatives of potential donors are not being asked for consent. Legislation on "required request" has been proposed to overcome this.

Family Interview for Brain Death and Tissue-organ Donation

open access: yes, 2023
After brain death, a family interview is required to discuss organ donation requests and procedures with the donor’s relatives. This interview process requires knowledge, communication skills and experience for the interviewers.

Heart transplantation outcomes with donation after circulatory death in patients with left ventricular assist device

open access: yesESC Heart Failure
Aims Donation after circulatory death (DCD) has emerged as a strategy to increase the donor pool for heart transplantation (HT). Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients represent a discrete and unique population.

Outcomes Following Donation After Brain Death and Donation After Circulatory Death Liver Transplantation in Patients with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

open access: yesTransplantology
Background: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) accounts for 10–15% of liver transplants but is the leading cause of retransplant. This study evaluates whether PSC patients have different survival and graft outcomes when receiving grafts from donors ...

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Causes of donation failure and improvement measures analyzed based on data from domestic deceased donors in 2019

open access: yesKorean Journal of Transplantation, 2020
In 2019, 1,630 organs were recovered from 450 brain death donors nationwide and were transplanted into 1,612 transplant recipients. However, considering that the number of potential brain-dead linked to the Korea Organ Donation Agency (KODA) information ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...
