Status of Dorper sheep as hosts of ectoparasites
Small Ruminant Research, 2000Seventeen ixodid tick species or subspecies have been collected from Dorper sheep in South Africa. The diseases transmitted or the conditions caused by these ticks in sheep are discussed. Although Dorper sheep may be infested with the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, this does not seem to cause production losses.

Grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep
Small Ruminant Research, 2000The grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep, as well as other related aspects (pasture intake, walking habits and trampling) is reviewed. It was clear that Dorper sheep are less-selective grazers, compared to Merino-type breeds. Dorpers utilised shrubs and bushes to a greater extent, but grass to a lesser extent in relation to Merino sheep.

Successful calcaneal common tendon tenorrhaphy in a Dorper lamb
Veterinary Record Case Reports, 2021Abstract Tendon rupture is an uncommon cause of lameness in small ruminants. This report aimed to present a successful common calcaneal tendon (CCT) tenorrhaphy in a Dorper lamb after rupture during a tail docking procedure. The lamb presented a 3.5 cm linear open wound over CCT.

Metabolizable protein requirements of Dorper crossbred ram lambs
Animal Feed Science and Technology, 2017Abstract The net protein (NP) and metabolizable protein (MP) requirements of Dorper crossbred ram lambs grown from 35 to 50 kg BW were assessed in a comparative slaughter trial. Thirty-five intact male lambs (34.1 ± 0.6 kg BW) of F1 crosses of Dorper × thin-tailed Han sheep were used: 7 lambs of 35 kg BW were slaughtered as the baseline animals at ...

Energy requirements of early‐weaned Dorper cross‐bred female lambs
Journal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, 2016SummaryThe net and metabolizable energy (NE and ME) requirements of Dorper cross‐bred female lambs with BWs of 20–35 kg were assessed in a comparative slaughter trial. Thirty‐five Dorper × thin‐tailed Han cross‐bred female lambs weaned at ~50 days of age (20.3 ± 2.15 kg BW) were used.

Performance of Dorper sheep under an accelerated lambing system
Small Ruminant Research, 1992Abstract Lambing records from 1984 to 1989 comprising 699 ewe lambing years were used. Ewes were exposed to three fixed 30-d joining periods/yr to lamb during February/March (first season), June/July (second season) and October/November (third season). Number of ewes lambed/ewes joined/yr was 0.85, and the number of lambs born/ewe joined/yr was 1.21.

Dorper BSI Monitoring with Load Cells and Raspberry PI
2019 IEEE 9th Symposium on Computer Applications & Industrial Electronics (ISCAIE), 2019The paper describes an alternative method to weigh and monitor the health of livestock via BSI. One method is by recording the measured weight for each livestock for daily weight comparison. The farmer needs to manually lift each of the livestock onto the weighing scale, using rope, producing risk of injury to both farmer and livestock.

Energy requirements of Dorper crossbred ewe lambs.
Journal of animal science, 2015The ME and NE requirements of Dorper crossbred ewe lambs grown from 35 to 50 kg BW were assessed in a comparative slaughter trial. Thirty-five ewe lambs (33.5 ± 0.6 kg BW) of F1 crosses of purebred Dorper and thin-tailed Han sheep were used: 7 lambs were slaughtered at the start of the trial to provide baseline measures of body composition and 7 lambs ...
