Status of Dorper sheep as hosts of ectoparasites
Small Ruminant Research, 2000Seventeen ixodid tick species or subspecies have been collected from Dorper sheep in South Africa. The diseases transmitted or the conditions caused by these ticks in sheep are discussed. Although Dorper sheep may be infested with the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, this does not seem to cause production losses.

The history of the Dorper sheep
Small Ruminant Research, 2000This short history of the Dorper sheep traces its background and the steps taken to develop that breed in South Africa. The most important traits considered for the developing of the Dorper are listed and the breeding system outlined. The development of the White Dorper is also detailed and the breed improvement programs are indicated.

Grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep
Small Ruminant Research, 2000The grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep, as well as other related aspects (pasture intake, walking habits and trampling) is reviewed. It was clear that Dorper sheep are less-selective grazers, compared to Merino-type breeds. Dorpers utilised shrubs and bushes to a greater extent, but grass to a lesser extent in relation to Merino sheep.

Meat Science, 2022
Meat quality is becoming more important for sheep breeding programs. Meat quality is a complex trait affected by genetic and environmental factors. In the present study, an integrative analysis of the longissimus thoracis tissue transcriptome and proteome was conducted to identify genes, proteins, and pathways related to meat quality in sheep.

Comparative proteomics reveals genetic mechanisms of body weight in Hu sheep and Dorper sheep
Journal of Proteomics, 2022Body weight (BW) is a critical economic trait for meat production in sheep, and it is a complex trait affected by numerous elements. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic mechanisms of sheep BW by a label-free proteomics approach. The result showed, a total of 27, 14, 61, and 65 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) were identified in ...

Laryngeal chondritis in two Dorper sheep
Veterinary Record Case Reports, 2020SUMMARY Laryngeal chondritis is an acute obstructive upper respiratory condition characterised by severe dyspnoea and laryngeal stridor, considered an uncommon disease in sheep. In this study, we describe detailed clinical evolution, imaging and pathological findings of the first cases of laryngeal chondritis in Dorper sheep.

Dorper sheep development in Indonesia
International Seminar on Livestock Production and Veterinary Technology, 2021Sheep production in Indonesia has not met the demands for domestic and international markets which tends to continually increase every year. There is a significant gap between the upstream and the downstream sectors in sheep business process resulting in a stagnant supply of live sheep or their meats and co-products to the market.
