The role of serotonergic systems in regulation of behavioral arousal and sleep-wake cycles is complex and may depend on both the receptor subtype and brain region involved. Increasing evidence points toward the existence of multiple topographically organized subpopulations of serotonergic neurons that receive unique afferent connections, give rise to ...

Origin of the dopaminergic innervation of the rat dorsal raphe nucleus
NeuroReport, 1995The aim of the present study was to describe the distribution of dopamine (DA) fibres in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) and to determine their neurones of origin. Using an anti-DA antibody, we observed a moderate density of DA varicose fibres over the DRN and a dense plexus of DA fibres in the ventrolateral central grey.

Morphometry of Dorsal Raphe Nucleus Serotonergic Neurons in Alcoholism
Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 2007Background: Reduced serotonergic function is hypothesized in alcohol abuse and dependence. Serotonergic innervation of the cortex arises predominantly from the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN). We sought to determine the number and morphometric characteristics of DRN serotonergic neurons postmortem in alcoholic individuals (n=9; age: 16–66years; 8M:1F ...

Diurnal variation in serotonin immunoreactivity in the dorsal raphe nucleus
Brain Research, 2005Serotonin (5-HT) immunostained sections were analyzed using integrated optical density (IOD) measures obtained throughout the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) in Mongolian gerbils at selected times during a 12:12 h light:dark cycle. Substantial diurnal variation occurred in 5-HT neuronal staining density, with lowest and highest IOD values occurring at the ...

Galanin Alters GABAergic Neurotransmission in the Dorsal Raphe Nucleus
Neurochemical Research, 2007The neuropeptide galanin and its three receptor subtypes (Gal R1-3) are highly expressed in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), a region of the brain that contains a large population of serotonergic neurons. Galanin is co-expressed with serotonin in approximately 40% of the DRN neurons, and galanin and GALR2 expression are elevated by antidepressants like ...

Network properties of a computational model of the dorsal raphe nucleus
Neural Networks, 2012Serotonin (5-HT) plays an important role in regulating mood, cognition and behaviour. The midbrain dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is one of the primary sources of 5-HT. Recent studies show that DRN neuronal activities can encode rewarding (e.g., appetitive) and unrewarding (e.g., aversive) behaviours.

Nicotinic modulation of serotonergic activity in the dorsal raphe nucleus
Reviews in the Neurosciences, 2013Cholinergic signaling mediated by nicotinic receptors has been associated to a large number of physiological and behavioral processes such as learning, memory, attention, food-intake and mood disorders. Although it is well established that many nicotinic actions are mediated through an increase in serotonin (5-HT) release, the physiological mechanisms ...

Glutamatergic afferent projections to the dorsal raphe nucleus of the rat
Brain Research, 2003Based on WGA-apo-HRP-gold (WG) retrograde tracing, the present study revealed that different subdivisions of the dorsal raphe (DR) such as dorsomedial, ventromedial, lateral wing, and caudal regions receive unique, topographically organized afferent inputs, that are more restricted than previously reported.

Synaptic relations of neurotensinergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus
Peptides, 1995The ultrastructure and synaptic relations of neurotensinergic neurons in the rat dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) were examined. The neurotensin-like immunoreactive (NT-L1) neurons in the DRN were fusiform or spherical. The NT-LI perikarya could only be detected in colchicine-treated animals whereas the immunoreactive axon terminals could only be found in ...

A spiking neuronal network model of the dorsal raphe nucleus
The 2011 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, 2011The raphe nucleus in the brain is the main source of serotonin (5-HT), an important brain chemical in regulating mood, cognition and behavior. This paper presents a spiking neuronal network model of the dorsal region of the raphe nucleus (DRN). We solve the perplexing problem of heterogeneous spiking neuronal behavior observed in the DRN by using an ...
