NOTHING stimulates more interest in a hitherto hopeless condition than the discovery of an effective means of therapeusis. This has been especially true recently in the entire field of congenital cardiac disease. For about two hundred years pathologists had known of double aortic arch, a rather rare abnormality, and physicians had correlated the ...

The recognition of a double aortic arch which causes significant constriction of the esophagus and trachea is relatively easy if the cardiac symptoms caused by this anomaly are borne in mind. Once suspected, the diagnosis may be confirmed readily by radiographic examination of the esophagus with a barium swallow.

In conclusion, the diagnosis of DAA should be suspected in an infant with either biphasic stridor or feeding-related respiratory distress. Radiographic studies combined with appropriate thorough endoscopic evaluation should confirm clinical suspicion. Thoracotomy with surgical division of the DAA has given excellent long-term results.

Vascular ring anomalies are developmental anomalies of the thoracic great vessels resulting in complete or partial encircling of the esophagus and the trachea by a vascular ring formation. Persistent right aortic arch with left ligamentum arteriosum accounts for 95% of vascular ring anomalies in dogs.

Double Aortic Arch with Left Arch Atresia
Heart, Lung and Circulation, 2009A girl, having an echocardiogram suggestive of double aortic arch, underwent a cardiac multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) examination. MDCT revealed double aortic arch with left arch atresia distal to the left subclavian artery. The left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery arose from the left arch, the right common carotid artery
