Using dried blood spot on HemoTypeSC™, a new frontier for newborn screening for sickle cell disease in Nigeria

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2022
Background: HemoTypeSC is a rapid, point-of-care testing (POCT) device for sickle cell disease (SCD) that traditionally uses the capillary blood from heel stick collected at the point of testing, a procedure that makes mass screening cumbersome and less ...

Evaluation of an HIV recent infection testing algorithm with serological assays among men who have sex with men in Mexico

open access: yesJournal of Infection and Public Health, 2020
Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence should be calculated in cross-sectional studies using recent infection testing algorithms (RITA) that consider clinical variables and serological test results such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent ...

HCV microelimination in harm reduction centres has benefits beyond HCV cure but is hampered by high reinfection rates

open access: yesJHEP Reports, 2022
Background & Aims: Significant scale-up of treatment among people who inject drugs (PWID) is crucial to achieve WHO HCV elimination targets. We explored the impact of on-site HCV diagnosis and treatment on PWID in an externalised hepatology clinic at

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus among people of South Asian origin in Glasgow: results from a community based survey and laboratory surveillance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Background South Asians often present late with HCV or HBV related liver disease which could have been avoided with early diagnosis and subsequent treatment; however the prevalence of HCV/HBV among South Asians in Glasgow is not known.

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Verification of dried blood spot as a sample type for HIV viral load and early infant diagnosis on Hologic Panther in Zambia

open access: yesBMC Research Notes, 2023
Objective Zambia has embarked on improving the diagnostic capacity by setting up high throughput and accurate machines in the testing process and introduction of dried blood spot (DBS) as a sample type.

Integrated Serologic Surveillance of Population Immunity and Disease Transmission. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Antibodies are unique among biomarkers in their ability to identify persons with protective immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases and to measure past exposure to diverse pathogens. Most infectious disease surveillance maintains a single-disease focus,

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.
