Evaluation of droplet dispersion during non-invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, nebuliser treatment and chest physiotherapy in clinical practice: implications for management of pandemic influenza and other airborne infections

open access: yesHealth Technology Assessment, 2010
Background: Influenza viruses are thought to be spread by droplets, but the role of aerosol dissemination is unclear and has not been assessed by previous studies.

Effectiveness of Face Masks in Preventing Airborne Transmission of SARS-CoV-2

open access: yesmSphere, 2020
Guidelines from the CDC and the WHO recommend the wearing of face masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus (CoV) disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, the protective efficiency of such masks against airborne transmission of infectious severe acute ...

Responsive Liquid Metal Droplets: From Bulk to Nano

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2022
Droplets exist widely in nature and play an extremely important role in a broad variety of industrial processes. Typical droplets, including water and oil droplets, have received extensive attention and research, however their single properties still ...

Optical Deformation of Emulsion Droplets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Optical tweezers are a useful and fascinating tool for the manipulation of a range of microscopic particles. I describe the set up of optical trapping apparatus, and investigate the use of a spatial light modulator for the creation of arrays of optical ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

EvoBot: An Open-Source, Modular, Liquid Handling Robot for Scientific Experiments

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Commercial liquid handling robots are rarely appropriate when tasks change often, which is the case in the early stages of biochemical research. In order to address it, we have developed EvoBot, a liquid handling robot, which is open-source and employs a

Mini review: recent advances in biosurfactant-based association colloids–formation of microemulsions

open access: yesFrontiers in Soft Matter, 2023
In the context of a more sustainable economy, bio-surfactants become increasingly important, due to their independence of petrol-based chemistry, their usually mild synthesis conditions, and in certain cases their pharmacological activity.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Programmable zwitterionic droplets as biomolecular sorters and model of membraneless organelles

open access: yes, 2021
It is emerging that cells can regulate biochemical functions by generating open compartments with well-defined composition. One important mechanism underlying this control is simple coacervation driven by disordered proteins that encode multivalent ...
