Single-Sided Digital Microfluidic (SDMF) Devices for Effective Coolant Delivery and Enhanced Two-Phase Cooling

open access: yesMicromachines, 2016
Digital microfluidics (DMF) driven by electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) has recently been attracting great attention as an effective liquid-handling platform for on-chip cooling.

511 KeV Photons From Color Superconducting Dark Matter

open access: yes, 2004
We discuss the possibility that the recent detection of 511 keV gamma rays from the galactic bulge, as observed by INTEGRAL, can be naturally explained by the supermassive very dense droplets (strangelets) of dark matter. These droplets are assumed to be

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Droplet‐Based Single‐Cell Measurements of 16S rRNA Enable Integrated Bacteria Identification and Pheno‐Molecular Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing from Clinical Samples in 30 min

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2021
Empiric broad‐spectrum antimicrobial treatments of urinary tract infections (UTIs) have contributed to widespread antimicrobial resistance. Clinical adoption of evidence‐based treatments necessitates rapid diagnostic methods for pathogen identification ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Electrical Tweezer for Droplet Transportation, Extraction, Merging and DNA Analysis

open access: yesMicromachines, 2017
Droplets of aqueous solutions distributed in an immiscible oil phase are increasingly used and investigated as a means to handle and assay small volumes of samples. The primary attraction of this method is that surface interactions are kept to a minimum,

Ratcheting droplet pairs [PDF]

open access: yesChaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2018
Millimetric droplets may be levitated on the surface of a vibrating fluid bath. Eddi et al. [Europhys. Lett. 82, 44001 (2008)] demonstrated that when a pair of levitating drops of unequal size are placed nearby, they interact through their common wavefield in such a way as to self-propel through a ratcheting mechanism.

Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of single circulating tumor cells in the follow‐up of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single circulating tumor cells (sCTCs) from high‐grade serous ovarian cancer patients were enriched, imaged, and genomically profiled using WGA and NGS at different time points during treatment. sCTCs revealed enrichment of alterations in Chromosomes 2, 7, and 12 as well as persistent or emerging oncogenic CNAs, supporting sCTC identity.
