Sulpha drugs and its antagonism

The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 1948
From the above experimental studies, and from the actual records we conclude that there is no necessity of an inference of the role of p-amino benzoic acid in the bacterial metabolism and how it is antagonised by the sulpha drugs. On the other hand we come to this conclusion from the results of direct observation that bacteria utilises oxygen from ...

Antagonism of drug-induced pulsus alternans in dogs

American Journal of Physiology-Legacy Content, 1960
Pulsus alternans and pseudoalternans were produced in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital by intravenous injections of moderate doses of one of several pharmacologic agents. Ventricular alternation was alleviated or abolished by a) drugs with positive inotropic action, b) drugs that reduced peripheral resistance, and c) drugs with antiarrhythmic ...

Folic acid antagonism of sulfa drug treatments

Trends in Parasitology, 2002
Abstract Folic acid antagonizes the sulfa drug treatment of malaria. This antagonism has been mimicked in a yeast model system, where the growth inhibition by sulfa drugs can be confounded. In addition, yeast studies show that the inhibition is independent of folic acid utilization, suggesting that the antagonism occurs by an unexpected mechanism.

Qualitative Aspects of Drug Antagonism

1937
The relation between chemical structure and pharmacological action is a subject of notorious difficulty. It may be said that there are scarcely any general rules discernible and that every cell-drug system appears to be a law unto itself. In the case of drugs which have sharply specific actions, it is common to find that the activity even of optical ...

Quantitative Aspects of Drug Antagonism and of Drug Synergism

1937
It was shown in the last chapter that, in populations of animals, changes in sensitivity to drugs can be produced by a wide variety of causes, and that in some cases variations in sensitivity occur for which the causes are unknown. It seems justifiable to assume that if the condition of organisms is altered by the administration of one drug, then this ...
