The burden of malaria in East Africa: prevalence, risk factors, and control strategies
Background Malaria continues to exert a severe toll on public health in East Africa, accounting for a large share of global morbidity and mortality. Despite national strategies and donor-funded efforts, the disease persists due to complex, intersecting ...

Public health advocacy for the Berlin Declaration on tuberculosis in the former Soviet Union: the view of Médecins Sans Frontières [PDF]
To assist international efforts to address major gaps in the availability and accessibility of quality diagnosis and treatment for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, Médecins Sans Frontières has adapted an approach combining three sets of interlinked ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Drug selection based on pan-genomics genetic features of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is a severe and persistent global public health issue, particularly exacerbated by the emergence of multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant strains. This study employed pan-genomic approaches

This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Prevention strategies for substance use disorders in low-resource settings
Substance use continues to be a major public health problem for the low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) around the world. Prevention strategies, which are theoretically grounded, culturally sensitive, and cost effective, can help such resource ...
